Google has launched its popular web-based version of the Google Talk IM feature for the iPhone. In a recent blog, Adam Connors, Software Engineer, Google mobile team announced that “We’ve just released in the US a new version of Google Talk designed specifically for the iPhone and iPod Touch browsers.”
In addition to Gmail messages to friends from the iPhone, users can now chat with them even on the move. Just like Google’s other applications designed and built for the iPhone, the Google Talk feature is laid out in a nicely customized and suitable way for the device. It is amazing how well the application has been ported over, it functions in a similar manner as on a regular desk top or a PC. All that users have to do is just go to www.google.com/talk, through the iPhone browser, sign in and then they can start chatting. Google Talk has no further need to download or install anything at all, it runs entirely in the browser.
The features include almost all the standard options users have on regular Google Talk, such as changing status messages and searching contacts. Its main screen sports a list of contacts’ names, icons and status messages. The iPhone version of Google Talk will also tell you if a friend is currently typing.
There are still some differences from using Google Talk on PCs and a real Instant Messaging service feature could eliminate and replace Text Messaging. This feature is not there as yet. For instance, in order to receive instant messages with Google Talk on your iPhone, the application needs to be open only in a Safari browser. Otherwise when you leave the page or the normal browser, it shuts down and signs you off automatically.
Other than that, the design is as similar and familiar to the desktop experience. Users can select and search from a quicklist of contacts, and manage multiple conversations.
