Steve Jobs, the flamboyant co-founder and CEO of Apple Inc. has called it quits, nominating another Apple veteran Tim Cook as his successor.
The Board has accepted Steve’s nomination of Tim Cook as his successor, while electing the former as the Chairman of the Board. Tim Cook was the COO at the time of being appointed as the new CEO.
It is not that the development was completely unexpected, as the IT world was already aware of the corporate guru’s ill health. But still it has left a wave of shock, for reasons not difficult to guess. For quite some time now Apple and Steve Jobs have been virtually synonymous, with we not being able to think of the organization without thinking of its leader. The way Steve led the IT giant from the front was really impressive. He got the company’s sales graph boosted by launching cutting edge products like iMac. And his hunger for innovation and success resulted in Apple’s foray into various branches of digital appliances, coming up with market leading products like iPod, iPad and iPhone that have now become key parts of our life. It is probably not too much to say that Steve Jobs made Apple successfully rewrite the digital appliances ecology.
Congratulations and hearty wishes for Tim Cook over his new responsibility. He boasts a rich experience (in fact, he served as Apple CEO temporary for 2 months in 2004). And it is expected that he will prove himself to be a worthy successor of his legendary predecessor. It is a different matter though that the huge legacy of Steve Jobs will always loom large over him and even his successors for many years to come.
