In an attempt to inspire the current technology minded younger generation, Datawind has decided to include free digital version of Indian War Comics (IWC) on all Aakash and UbiSlate 7 tabs. These digital comics will share the valor and courage shown by various martyrs in the battlefield.
IWCs are available in open market through Om Books and Westland. On 23 January Army Chief V K Singh launched the digital version of the comic at a press conference saying “This particular idea itself is not only laudable, but I think each one of us must realize that there is something which will make a tremendous difference. Those of you who have been lucky to read the Amar Chitra Katha and know what it did to you, to know your own history, I think these war comics are going to make a fantastic difference. Specially when they are loaded on to the Aakash tablet.”
Singh launched digital version of four comics based on various immortal war heroes of Indian armed forces, these being:
Braveheart of Mumbai 26/11: Based on Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, a major in elite Special Action Group of the NSG, who went down fighting in November 2008 Mumbai terrorist attack. Major Unnikrishnan was awarded Ashok Chakra for his bravery and service to motherland.
The True Maratha: Tells the story of Col. N. J Nair, the only soldier to have awarded Kirti Chakra and Ashok Chakra. Col. Nair is easily the most decorated soldier in Indian history recognized for his bravery.
Yeh Dil Maange More: Based on Capt Vikram Batra, a name so synonymous with 1999 Kargil war. Capt Batra was posthumously awarded Param Vir Chakra.
Frozen Fury: Tells the tale of living legend Capt. Bana Singh, who was awarded Param Vir Chakra for his conspicuous bravery and leadership under most adverse conditions.
Though these digital comics are only available in English at the moment. Aditya Bakshi, a Merchant Navy officer and promoter of IWC has stated that they are planning to release it in Hindi within four months following that up with strips in native languages of martyrs.
