ZDNet has recently launched the first tool for Overclocking the Mac Pro. Available on the ZDNet Downloads Site, the directory is one of the largest technical libraries on the Internet, covering software for Windows, Mac, and several other Mobile systems.

Named as the ZDNet Clock, the software is now available for free download. The new software, currently supports processors equipped with Intel 5000 or Intel 5400 chipsets, which means the Mac-Pro and Xserve models. The ZDNet Clock is quite easy to install, it self-detects the chips on launch and, using a slider tool, can increase clockspeed and frontside bus speed by 15 to 20 percent. The version 1.0 software requires the Max OS X 10.5, and most computers with 2.8GHz chips should be able to meet or exceed 3.2 GHz.

Sources from the ZDNet recommend, Jumps of 10MHz at a time in order to find highest stable speed, as each CPU will have have its own tolerances. Hynix, the software developer, has mentioned in a recent review that, the RAM chip quality can affect the overclocking process, but it still performs well with proprietary modules from Kingston and Transcend .

The ZDNet Clock also features an error-tracking module to help users check stability and gradually increasing speed until it reaches optimum stable limit.
